Gajra means a garland.
The string of jasmine or marigold you tie in someone's hair, or around their neck to welcome them home. We started by making gajra for weddings. Now we tie bouquets, with the same care.
Tied the day it leaves.
We buy from farms in Kakani and Godawari at dawn, condition every stem in cold water, and tie each bouquet by hand the day it is delivered. Three riders on scooters carry them across the valley, upright, in a box with water.
Sunita and Bikash run the bench. Rojan rides. Every card is written by hand.
What each stem says.
A week, at least.
Do these four things and most bouquets last seven to ten days.
Cut on a slant
Trim two centimetres off each stem with a sharp knife, at an angle, before the first vase.
Clean, cool water
Fill the vase halfway. Change the water every two days and trim again.
Leaves out
Pull off any leaf that would sit under the water. They rot first.
Away from fruit
Keep flowers out of the sun and away from bananas and apples; their gas ages petals.
Before you order.
How late can I order for today?
We need two hours to tie a bouquet, so up to 6 pm for the evening window, if a rider is free. The builder only shows times we can really make.
What if they're not home?
The rider calls them. If no one answers, we leave the flowers with a neighbour or guard and send you a photo, or bring them back the next morning.
Will it look exactly like the drawing?
The same flowers, colours, paper and ribbon, tied by hand. Each stem is a little different, which is the point.
